Not only was it a rare in Fourth Edition, but it was bumped up to rare after originally appearing in Antiquities at uncommon. How about that?
Fourth came out in 1995, as did Homelands. Cards from the sets before were thought to be overpowered, so for awhile they were releasing severely underpowered cards. Sure enough, a 2/2 artifact creature that gained you two life when it dies was rare-worthy, WotC thought.

This was an anagram of Soul Net, then they droped the 's' because there was only 1 in the picture. Or at least that's the way I remember reading about it back in the day.
